2.It was a bright May afternoon along the Maryland coast.Jonathan Bauer, and his 13-year-old daughter,Ava,were driving with the windows down as they headed home on the bridge.Suddenly, the calm was disturbed by the squeal of tires.
Not far ahead of them,a pickup(皮卡車) was drifting from one lane to the other. It slammed into a concrete barrier, flipped over the car directly ahead of them, and came to rest hanging over the railing of the bridge.Bauer hit the brakes in time, but another car came sliding backward toward him and struck his car's fender(擋泥板).Bauer stopped his car. "Ava,are you OK?" he asked. She was shaken, but otherwise unhurt.
And then a scream came from the pickup above the waters of the bay.The driver dashed to the railing.Bauer ran up beside him.The man pointed down, saying something in Spanish. There was a car seat in the water.Struggling next to it was a girl, about two years old, terrified, floating on her back and crying.
Matters quickly went worse when the girl rolled over onto her stomach. "Ava!Stay by the car!" Bauer yelled, drooping to remove his shoes.Would he get hurt?Could he reach the girl in time?No time to wonder. All he had in mind was the faith that she must be saved immediately.
A moment later he was bouncing off the sandy bottom-unhurt!Bauer swam to the girl and lifted her out of the water:mouth half open, eyes nearly closed, not breathing.Standing,he laid her against his shoulder and hit at her back with the flat of his hand.Water came streaming from her mouth and slowly her eyes were opened. He pulled her close, hugging her to shelter her from the cold.
A boat pulled up and hauled them aboard.Ava Bauer was so inspired by her father's actions that four months later she became a firefighter so that she, too, could save lives. "That girl is going to live a whole life because of him," she says. "It's incredible."

3.Morogoro,Tanzia,British research scientist,Dr.Donna Kean is training 170 rats to be sent into earthquake ruins to do vital work in finding earthquake survivors. The project has trained about seven rats to date, taking around two weeks to get the rescue rats up to speed. These rescue rats are sent into mock(模擬的)earthquake ruins with tiny backpacks that contain microphones, video gears, and location trackers. These tools will allow the rescue teams to communicate with earthquake survivors in real-time.
"I train these clever creatures to save victims trapped in collapsed buildings after earthquakes. We kit them out with a rat backpack, and train them to activate a switch when they find a victim and come back for a tasty treat. " posted Dr Donna Kean on Twitter on May 26,2022.
Dr.Kean expressed how the rescue rats are ideal for this type of work saying, "Rats would be able to get into small spaces to get victims buried in rubble. " The highly swift rats never set off landmines and their natural swiftness makes them ideal for use in hard-to-navigate disaster zones.Their suitability for this work goes further, with rats being good at surviving in different environments and living off of anything. The rescue rats are even being trained to respond to beeps that call them back to their base.
Dr.Kean's team collaborates(合作) with the non-profit organization APOLO for their "Hero Rats" project. These "Hero Rats" are set to start working with a search and rescue team in Turkey, joining earthquake rescue efforts in the high-risk area. The group of 170 rats is being trained for additional projects involving landmines, tuberculosis (肺結(jié)核),and even sniffing out Brucellosis,an infectious disease that impacts farm animals.Dr.Kean feels hopeful about her project's promising results and is excited to be the only organization in this space working with this species.
(1)Why are the rescue rats equipped with backpacks?
A.To monitor the rats.
B.To locate the survivors.
C.To record the rescue process.
D.To keep track of the survivors.
(2)According to the passage, what can a trained rescue rat do?
A.Set off landmines accurately.
B.Dig out those buried in rubble.
C.Figure out the signal from beeps.
D.Complete the task without a reward.
(3)What make(s) rats outweigh other animals in this project?
A.Their efforts in training.
B.Their nature of rescuing.
C.Their eagerness for survivals.
D.Their adaptability to environments.
(4)What can be inferred about the "Hero Rats" project?
A.The results fail to prove the potential.
B.The rats have to be trained repeatedly.
C.The project probably pioneers in the space.
D.The rats have been widely used in various fields.組卷:4引用:2難度:0.3

Cheemi was a poor orphan living in Pune.Nobody knew where she had come from.Yet everyone accepted the frail little girl and named her Cheemi — the little sparrow. She helped people by doing odd jobs for them, such as fetching vegetables from the corner shop or looking after babies when their mothers went shopping.
Everybody in the neighbourhood liked Cheemi, except Kaki.Kaki was the richest woman there.Cheemi,in her eyes, was dirty and inferior to her. Therefore, she would not allow Cheemi into her big house. The house was almost like a mansion with big wooden carved doors and huge halls.Surprisingly, the windows of the rooms decorated with beads and curtains, were very small.
Kaki lived with her son,her daughter-in-law Gauri and her little grandson,Chotu.Chotu was a great favourite with the girls.Gauri was a very nice, educated lady and didn't mind Chotu being carried by others.Kaki, however, never allowed Cheemi to touch Chotu. How Cheemi wished she could play with him!
That year,Panshet Dam collapsed and the waters of the Mutha river, near Pune, had entered the city. The water rose fast. There was confusion everywhere.Police vans were trying to help.
When water entered their house,Kaki and Gauri were on the ground floor.Within seconds the water rose. The police persuaded Kaki and Gauri to climb to the top floor. In the hurry and confusion, they forgot that Chotu was sleeping on the first floor!
The staircases were flooded. It was impossible to get to the bedroom on the first floor. The door to the room was closed but not bolted.Any moment the water could rush in.The women panicked. "Chotu!" they cried. "What'll happen to our Chotu?"
Suddenly the police discovered that one of the bedroom windows was open, but it was too small for an adult to crawl (爬) in.Only a child could. But no one was willing to let their children take the risk.
