2.Summer is around the corner, and you may already be dreaming about how you'll spend your break.Chances are, staying in school is not your top pick. But for 13-year-old Simone Jones of Philadelphia — and more than 2 million other students in the U.S. — going to school in the summer is the only choice. That's because Simone goes to a year-round school.
In fact,year-round schools have almost the same number of vacation days as traditional-calendar schools. In a year-round school, summer break is usually shortened to about four weeks;the remaining vacation time gets spread out over the rest of the year.Simone, for example, gets a few weeks off in the fall, winter, and spring.
That extra time off during the school year can be a good thing. "Everyone thinks a year-round school is hard," says Simone. "But the little breaks take a lot of pressure (壓力) off us."
Reorganizing the year can prevent summer learning loss — that is,forgetting what you've learned from the prior (之前的) school year. However, there is a downside. In fact, some schools have tried year-round schedules (時(shí)間表) only to turn back when it was difficult to carry out.Try setting up a soccer game with another school when you're on a break every few weeks.Planning family trips can be difficult too, especially if siblings (兄弟姐妹) are on different school schedules.
What does summer vacation mean in our culture? It's an American tradition,a time to create lasting memories. But is tradition a good enough reason to keep it around?Summer break began 120 years ago, when it was very hot in the summer,so schools started closing.Today,we have air conditioning. And most parents work. For many kids, summer days are spent mostly indoors, playing video games and watching TV.Clearly the world has changed. Is it time for summer break to change, too?

3.The New Year is a time for celebrations for almost everyone around the world. In Britain, people go to pubs and nightclubs to dance the old year away, and to welcome in the new one at midnight.Everyone wants to kiss someone special (boyfriend, girlfriend or even a complete stranger! )as the bells ring out at midnight.
In recent years, street parties have become more popular.Hundreds or even thousands of people gather in squares, main streets or on the river banks to listen to bands playing and to see fabulous fireworks displays.
For people who stay at home, most watch special, live New Year shows on TV and countdown, along with the presenters, from 10 to 1 as the last seconds of the old year tick away and the bells of the New Year are rung.
In Scotland,on New Year's Eve,people visit their neighbours and drink, dance and generally have a good time.If you're invited to a Scottish home,it's important to know what to bring with you:a lump of coal, some shortbread and some whisky.
The coal shows warmth so you're wishing that the people you visit will have enough heat in the coming year. The shortbread represents food,so you're hoping that the people will have enough to eat in the New Year. Some Scots call whisky "the water of life",so when you hand over your bottle to your hosts,it means you want them to have enough to drink over the next 12 months.
There's one more key task you still have to perform if you can.The first person to knock on a neighbour's door is supposed to be a tall, dark, handsome man.If you are, you'll bring good luck to the household. But what if that's not you?Well, don't ring the bell just yet.Wait a while and the right person will turn up soon!

B.street concerts have become more popular on New Year's Eve
C.British people let off fireworks in public places to celebrate the New Year

(3)Why do visitors take some things to a Scottish home on New Year's Eve?
A.To share good food and warmth.

Last week,Tom decided to visit his aunt. And he called her first.
"Hello,Auntie. This is Tom.How are you?" asked Tom over the phone.
"I'm fine,Tom.Thanks.I'm just a bit lonely," said Tom's aunt.Hearing that,he knew he had made a right decision.
"I'm coming this weekend.I want to spend the weekend with you," he immediately said, thinking his aunt would be surely full of joy.
"Really? That's great!I miss you so much," his aunt said excitedly.
Tom set off on Friday afternoon. He thought he would arrive by taxi in the evening, but there was an accident on the road and all the traffic was stopped for almost an hour. When he got off the bus,it was getting dark.
It's a ten-minute walk from the bus station to his aunt's house. The village had experienced a lot of changes.Tom looked around curiously.Just at that moment, another bus stopped and a girl got off the bus.The girl passed by Tom and began to walk into the village.Thinking that his aunt was waiting for him,Tom began to walk into the village, too.
He walked behind the girl. After about two minutes,it seemed that the girl noticed him.She looked back hurriedly, and then continued to walk.Moments later, the girl looked back again and then quickened her pace.
