3.Antarctica (南極洲) is the coldest, windiest, highest and driest continent (大陸) on the planet. The lowest temperature ever recorded on Earth was-94.7℃in eastern Antarctica in-2010.The continent experiences regular Katabatic winds, reaching 300 km per hour. There is little rainfall and the air is very dry.Indeed, the Polar Plateau (極地高原) is regarded as a desert which experiences similar rainfall levels to the Sahara Desert.
It is the fifth-largest continent and is almost 1.5 times the size of the United States. Its coastline covers about 18,000 km.About 98% of the continent is covered in a thick continental ice sheet and the remaining 2% is rock.
Antarctica has six months of daylight followed by six months of darkness. It contains-70% of the planet's freshwater and 90% of the world's ice.
Strong winds and wild storm shave been closely connected with Antarctica since its discovery and continue to be a main challenge for modern explorers. Most of the early diaries and tales of exploration of Antarctica are filled with stories of how the weather was man's biggest enemy on the continent.Nature's power is seldom seen as ferocious as it is in Antarctica, making it one of the most difficult places to live on Earth.
The first people to reach the South Pole were from the Norwegian-led expedition (探險隊) of Roald Amundsen on December 14,1911.One month later,Robert,Scott's British expedition also reached 90 South but all members unluckily died on their return journey.
Before this, the thought over the existence of a"southern land"was not confirmed until the early 1820s.At this time,British and American business operators and British and Russian national expeditions began exploring the Antarctic Peninsula area and other areas south of the Antarctic Circle. In 1840,it was believed that Antarctica is indeed a continent and not just a group of islands.

4.It's easy to believe that robots are stealing jobs from human workers and badly affect the job market;after all, you've likely heard that they are tracking and moving packages without the use of human hands.
But there's no need to worry about a robot takeover just yet, says a new study from BYU sociology professor Eric Dahlin.Dahlin's research found that robots aren't replacing (取代) humans at the rate most people think, but people are likely to greatly exaggerate (夸大) the rate of robot takeover.
To understand the relationship between job loss and robots,Dahlin surveyed nearly 2,000 people about their views on jobs being replaced by robots. They were first asked to guess what is the percentage of employees whose employers (雇主) have replaced jobs with robots. They were then asked whether their employers have ever replaced their jobs with robots.
The study found that only 14% of workers say they've seen their job replaced by a robot. But those who have experienced job displacement due to a robot overstate the effect of robots taking jobs from humans by about three times.
"Our understanding of robots taking over jobs is greatly exaggerated," says Dahlin. Those who haven't lost jobs overstate it by about double, and those who have lost jobs overstate it by about three times.Eye-catching headlines saying a bad future of employment have likely overblown the situation of robots taking over jobs.
The finding fits early studies, which suggest that robots aren't replacing workers.Rather, workplaces, where both employees and robots are working together, deliver more value in a way. "An everyday example is an autonomous machine at your local department store," says Dahlin. "This robot cleans the floors while employees clean under shelves or other difficult-to-reach places."
(1)How did Eric Dahlin carry out his research?
A.By asking people questions.
B.By comparing early studies.
C.By interviewing employers.
D.By studying new businesses.
(2)What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.Bad effects of technology.
B.A fall in laid-off workers.
C.Benefits of using robots.
D.The finding of the study.
(3)What might deepen people's worry about robot takeover according to the text?
A.Low pay.

Stan joked. "Ah,wait and see,Grandpa.I think you're going to like this a lot better than a chocolate cake," Chuck replied.
At that moment,Peter excitedly brought out his laptop and flashed a 3 D model of a modern farmhouse.Kyle and Stan stared at the computer screen. "What are we looking at?" Stan asked his grandsons. "We know how much your dad valued his farm and how much you wanted to honor him by maintaining it.Chuck and I raised money to fix the farmhouse and the farm, "Peter said with a smile.
Stan covered his mouth with his hand.Tears instantly streamed down his face. "You'd do that for me?"he cried."Grandpa, you're the best grandfather on earth," Chuck told him."Wed do absolutely anything for you. There's nothing else you need to say but to assure us that you'll help us rebuild the farm,Grandpa! You too,Dad!"
