19．It was 7 a.m.jye.ai May 12，1998.Robert and Lindley had already scanned the materials aboard the train.Slowly the train pulled out of the station，headed east，for its 172-mile run to Peru ，Indiana.
Marshall began working in the soil.Sitting next to her was her 19-month-old daughter，Emily，who played close at hand.Eventually，Marshall was totally absorbed in her work.
Robert and Lindley approached Lafayette at about 1：45 p.m.jye.ai slowed the train to the speed limit.Ahead of them，over three miles of track，lay 24 street crossings.
As the train came out of a curve，Lindley noticed a small dot on the right rail about 150 yards ahead.While Lindley worked the controls，Robert stood alongside，staring ahead at the rail.Now，as the train approached the object on the rail，Robert looked closely and shouted， "It's a baby!"
Suddenly stopping the train around a curve could cause derailment（脫軌）.But the terrible situation left Lindley no choice.He had to risk an emergency stop and braked hard.
Standing on the rail，Marshall felt frightened at the coming of the train，but she stood fixed，unable to move.
Robert had been a top runner at university，and he kept running in his spare time.Looking at the girl ahead in the middle of the rail，he suddenly had an idea.Reaching out with his left hand，he was ready to jump out of the train.
