2.A few years ago,Adina Lichtman was handing out sandwiches on the streets of New York City to help people experiencing homelessness. One man, grateful for the sandwich, approached her and offered a surprising idea.
"It's great that you're giving out sandwiches," he said, "but one thing we really need is socks, especially as winter approaches. "
"Here I was, sandwiches in hand, thinking I knew the best way to help people," Lichtman said. "It was a powerful lesson, and I wanted to put it into action. "
She began that night, with a simple step:going doorto door on the floor of her dormitory at New York University, asking her classmates if they could each donate(捐贈) just one pair of their own socks to someone experiencing homelessness. She got 40 pairs of socks in a single night, from a single floor. The next morning she opened her door to find a lot of socks that other people had donated.
That morning officially kicked off Knock Knock,Give a Sock(KKGS),a new nonprofit(非營利的) organization that has now provided over 350,000 pairs of socks to the homeless across America. To date, over 50 colleges and high schools across the US have joined KKGS over the years.
"While many people donate clothing,9 out of every 10 clothing donors have never donated socks. On top of that, people who are trying to donate socks often find it difficult to donate used socks," she says. "KKGS is one of the only organizations that collects used socks. We have volunteers knocking on doors of their classmates in school,of their workmates at work, and even of their neighbors. "
But,whether you're 26 or 62,you don't need to wait to organize your own sock drive, collect socks,or even wash and clean some of your own to donate to your local shelter,or someone in need who you meet on the street.
(1)How did the homeless man's words affect Lichtman?
A.They caused her to start KKGS.
B.They pushed her to go to college.
C.They encouraged her to house the homeless.
D.They made her continue to give out sandwiches.
(2)How did Lichtman's classmates react to her request for donation?
A.Some refused it politely.
B.They strongly supported it.
C.Some felt quite surprised by it.
D.They considered it unreasonable.
(3)In what way is KKGS special?
A.It has earned a lot of money from students.
B.It employs college students as volunteers.
C.It provides socks for those in need.
D.It was set up by the government.
(4)What advice does the author offer to people?
A.Take action in small ways.
B.Start your own organization.
C.Make donations from an early age.
D.Find creative ways to help people.組卷:2引用:2難度:0.5 -
3.When my boss started talking about pension(退休金) arrangements,it suddenly dawned_on me:I was going to be stuck working in an office job for the next 40 years.I'd always dreamed of working outdoors but I ended up doing a law degree at the University of the West of England in Bristol, thinking that this would bring me a better job.
After graduating,I became an adviser.I enjoyed the work, but knew it wasn't the right career for me.At this point,my 98 yearold grandma died, leaving me enough money to pay for an agricultural course.I decided to study agriculture at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester.
I loved the programme.I spent my holidays from milking cows to helping in farm shops.I spent time lambing(照料母羊產(chǎn)羔) on a beautiful hill farm in Wales.I'd get up at 5 a.m.jye.ai the morning,go out to care for the lambs that had been born over night.
In my old job, getting up early to go to the office was a struggle. It's easier on a farm, where you know there are animals that rely on you. They're living things, and if you don't turn up something serious might happen to them.
I've also been fortunate enough to find a job as industry communications manager with Red Tractor, the largest food assurance scheme(保障計劃) in the UK.The role is very varied:one day I might talk at an agricultural show, educating children about where their food comes from;the next day I could be managing the design of the new food any farming standards.
My advice to anyone wanting a career change is to seize(抓住) the moment. To those interested in working in agriculture, try to get as much work experience as you can.
(1)What does the underlined part "dawned on" in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Hit.
B.Moved.
C.Excited.
D.Satisfied.
(2)What does the author think of her job on a farm?
A.Busy.
B.Tiring.
C.Difficult.
D.Enjoyable.
(3)What did the author do at Red Tractor?
A.She milked cows.
B.She helped in farm shops.
C.She took care of lambs on the farm.
D.She gave speeches on agriculture to children.
(4)What is the author's advice to readers?
A.Work as a volunteer on a farm.
B.Make a career change as soon as possible.
C.Take the chance to do what you want to do.
D.Get enough work experience before looking for a job.組卷:0引用:1難度:0.5 -
4.When you think of a jungle adventure, what comes to mind? Are they gorgeous birds flying through the air or monkeys jumping through the forest?Do you think of plants?Probably not. After all, plants aren't the most exciting living things in the world. They just sit there and absorb water and nutrients from the soil and the sun.But actually there are also some plants that eat insects and even small animals from time to time.We call these unusual things carnivorous(食肉性) plants.Although most carnivorous plants eat small insects, larger carnivorous plants in some hot and wet areas have been known to capture rats, birds, and frogs.
One carnivorous plant many people are familiar with is the Venus flytrap. Its unique "jaws(頜)" will function when flies and other small insects touch it.Once its jaws close on its victim,it produces a chemical substance that breaks down the insect and absorbs the insect's nutrients.
There are several other examples of carnivorous plants. For example, some plants can catch insects with their leaves, which are like a tall narrow wineglass, while some trap their victims with sticky tentacles(觸手).And some growing in ponds and streams absorb their victims like underwater cleaners.Carnivorous plants tend to grow in areas where the soil is very thin and lacks necessary nutrients. These plants must find other sources for the nutrients they need.
Trapping and eating insects allows these unique plants to survive.Unfortunately, human and environmental factors continue to threaten the limited environments where you can find wild carnivorous plants.
Still for many people, the thought of a plant eating an animal seems very strange. In fact, more than one person has turned the idea into a scary story or movie.Carnivorous plants don't pose any danger to humans, though.Unless you're the size of a tiny insect, you don't have to worry about falling prey to a Venus flytrap.
(1)What can we learn about the Venus flytrap?
A.It produces a special smell to attract insects.
B.It is the most important carnivorous plant.
C.It catches insects with its unique "jaws".
D.It is a kind of poisonous plant.
(2)Why do carnivorous plants hunt animals for food?
A.They try to reduce the harmful insects.
B.They help keep the balance of nature.
C.They need some nutrients to survive.
D.They enjoy the taste of animals.
(3)What's the challenge faced by carnivorous plants?
A.Less concern from human beings.
B.Poorer environments to live in.
C.Threats from bigger animals.
D.Limited choices of food.
(4)What can be the best title for the passage?
A.Plants' Ways of Catching Insects
B.Potential Dangers in the Jungle
C.Plants That Eat Living Things
