  • 11.Japanese artist Ei Wada discovered that old television sets made great percussion instruments(打擊樂器) by mistake, but he managed to turn this inadvertent discovery into an art.Today, his unique Braun Tube Jazz Band is famous all over the world.
Wada first became interested in percussion music at the age of four, after attending a Gamelan music performance in Indonesia. He was impressed by the sound of the percussion instruments, recalling that he felt "taken to another world".This memory stuck with him,and a few years later, while playing some old cassette tapes,he realized that the sounds they produced were very similar to the Gamelan music that had made such a big impression on him.Since then,he has been focusing on producing sounds with old devices that people usually throw away.
While attending university,Wada met three other boys who shared their love for unconventional musical instruments, and together they founded Open-Reel Ensemble-a band that specializes in making music with other old tech. And that's how the Japanese musician discovered his most successful instrument—the old TV sets.
Wada said it happened completely by mistake. After plugging a sound cable into a composite(復(fù)合的) video connector port and seeing the sound on the screen as an image,he started pairing many TVs with PC-controlled video decks at different pitches(音高),thus turning them into percussion instruments. Then,he connected the guitar to his feet and started touching the TV screens to produce buzzing noise.Today,he can make the old television sets sound like electric drums.
The Japanese artist uses old TVs to transform light into sound. It sounds strange, but just take a look at the video of Wada performing and you'll see it's actually pretty cool.

D.He formed his own band-Braun Tube Jazz Band.
(3)When did Ei Wada found Open Reel Ensemble?

    A.After he graduated from college.
B.Before he attended a Gamelan music performance.
C.When he played some old cassette tapes.
D.When he was studying at a university.
(4)What does the fourth paragraph mainly talk about?

  • 12.Astypalea,a butterfly-shaped island in the central Aegean, hopes to become Greece's first carbon-free tourist destination.Under a deal with the government,Volkswagen(大眾汽車),has donated several new electric vehicles for use by Astypalea's public services. It will sell others at cost price to its 1,200 residents. In return, the government has largely increased subsidies (補(bǔ)貼) for the islanders to buy electric scars and will build a hybrid(混合的) solar and wind power plant to replace those polluting generators.
Unlike other nearby islands,Astypalea 1s not connected to Greece's electricity system. With only 3,000 rooms for visitors in small hotels or flats, tourism is still low-key.Many residents make a living in the old-fashioned way:raising goats, keeping bees and fishing. The island was selected for Volkswagen's e-mobility experiment after Nikos Komineas, the go-ahead mayor, contacted the transport ministry for help in finding an electric bus to try out on its rough roads.
Most islanders sound enthusiastic about the project.Mr.Komineas expects the number of private cars on Astypalea to fall by a third over .the next five years. Its residents,he says, will get around on e-scooters and electric minibuses, which will be free, linked to a mobile-phone app and available round the clock.
Some observers find a bit of green washing.Building a solar park that would produce the island's electricity will not get started before the tourist season ends.A single wind turbine(渦輪) will not be fixed before 2026 even if the licensing process-goes smoothly,On the other hand, the islanders worry that tourists will go elsewhere if the view is destroyed by a turbine 200 meters high. And even then, the hybrid power unit is planned to cover only about 80% of summer demand. But it is a start.

(1)What common measure do Volkswagen and the government take?

    A.Offering money-related support.
    B.Developing a mobile-phone app.
    C.Making electric cars.
    D.Establishing a power plant.
(2)Which promotes Astypalea's being selected for the experiment?

    A.Tourism development and heavy traffic.
    B.Location and government's efforts.
    C.Islanders' demand and road conditions.
    D.Islanders' lifestyle and large population.
(3)What is the major concern of the islanders if a wind turbine is fixed?

    A.The licensing process.
    B.Environmental damage.
    C.Loss of tourists.
D.The influence on their daily life.
(4)What can be inferred from the text?

A.The experiment will come to nothing.
B.There are difficulties in conducting the project.
C.Green tourism will become a trend in Greece.
D.The islanders are unwilling to change their lifestyle.

  • 13.Anyone who commutes (通勤) by car knows that traffic jams are an unavoidable part of life. But humans are not alone in facing potential backups.
Ants also commute-between their nest and sources of food. The survival of their colonies(領(lǐng)地) depends on doing this efficiently.
When humans commute, there's a point at which cars become dense (稠密) enough to slow down the flow of traffic, causing jams.Motsch,a mathematician in Arizona State University, and his colleagues wanted to know if ants.jye.ai :the move could also get stuck. So they regulated traffic density by building bridges-of various widths between a colony of Argentine ants and a source of food. Then they.jye.ai and watched. "The goal was to try to find out a what point they are going to have a traffic jam" said Sebastian Motsch.
But it appears that that never happened. They always managed to avoid traffic jams. The flow of ants did increase at the beginning as ants started to fill the bridge and then levelled off at high densities. But it never slowed down or stopped, even when the bridge was nearly filled with ants.
The researchers then took a closer look at how the behavior of individual ants impacted traffic as a whole. And they found that when ants sense overcrowding, they adjust their speeds and avoid entering high-density areas, which prevents jams. These behaviors may be promoted by pheromones, chemicals that tell other ants where a trail is.The ants also manage to avoid colliding (碰撞) with each other at high densities, which could really slow them down. The study is in the journal eLife.
Can ants help us solve our own traffic problems? Not likely, says Motsch. That's because when it comes to getting from point A to point B as fast as possible, human drivers put their own goals first Individual ants have to be more cooperative in order to feed the colony. But the research could be useful in improving traffic flow for self-driving cars, which can be designed to be less like selfish humans-and more like ants.

(1)What does the underlined word "this" in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Surviving.
    B.Avoiding jams.
    C.Finding food.
    D.Commuting.
(2)How did the researchers control the traffic density of the commuting ants?

A.By controlling the widths of their path.
    B.Through closer observation.
C.By finding out the dense points.
    D.By regulating their numbers
(3)According to the research, ants can avoid traffic jams mainly because
    .
    A.they follow a special route
B.they level off at high densities
C.they depend on their natural chemicals to adjust their speeds
D.they never stop or slow down on the way
(4)What is the best title of the passage?

    A.Traffic Jams.
    B.Unavoidable?Not for Ants!
    C.Survival of an Ant Colony.
    D.Differences Between Human and Ants.

Therefore, the new parents decided to establish a one-stop environmentally friendly shop where residents were able to buy almost all living necessities.(4)

According to Dora Lam,there are some misunderstandings over the price of "zero waste" products. Some people have the stereotype (刻板印象) that these products are expensive or even unaffordable.Referring to the spices and food sold at Slowood, she said they were more economical than those sold at supermarkets. For example,a bottle of basil that is on sale at Slowood for less than HK﹩10 goes for about HK﹩35 at supermarkets.(5)
Dora Lam hopes the concept of zero waste could be more widely accepted in the future. "Everyone can help by forming easy eco-habits,such as using reusable bottles, ordering takeaway food as little as possible,or using less tissues. " she said.

A.This is how Slowood came into being.
