2.I'm a stand up comic. One day,a woman from The Daily News called and said she wanted to do an article on me.When she had finished interviewing me for the article, she asked, "What are you planning to do next?" Well,at the time, there was absolutely nothing I was planning on doing next,so I asked her what she meant, pausing for a moment. She told me she was interested in me!
So I thought I'd better tell her something. What came out was, "I'm thinking about breaking the Guinness Book of World Records for Fastest-Talking Female."
The newspaper article came out the next day,and the writer had included my parting remarks about trying to break the world's Fastest-Talking Female record. At about 5:00 p.m.jye.ai afternoon I got a call from Larry King Live, which I had never heard of,asking me to go on the show. They wanted me to try to break the record, and they told me they would pick me up at 8:00—because they wanted me to do it that night!
Then I sat down to figure out what on earth I was going to do on the show.I called Guinness to find out how to break a fast-talking record. They told me I would have to recite something either Shakespeare or theBible.Shakespeare and I had never really gotten along,so I figured the Bible was my only hope.I began practicing and practicing, over and over again.I was both nervous and excited at the same time.
Then I decided just to give it my best shot, and I did.I broke the record, becoming the World's Fastest-talking Female by speaking 585 words in one minute in front of a national television audience.I broke it again two years later, with 603 words in a minute. My career took off.
People often ask me how I did that.I tell them I live my life by this simple philosophy:I always say yes first;then I ask, "Now,what do I have to do to accomplish that?" Then I ask myself, "What is the worst thing that can happen if I don't succeed?" The answer is,I simply don't succeed! And what's the best thing that can happen?I succeed!
What more can life ask of you?Be yourself, and have a good time!

3.For top students from low-income families, the challenge of applying to colleges is particularly difficult.1 in 4 deal with all of that—the writing, the studying, the researching and applying—completely on their own.One approach to make this whole process easier?Pair students up with an adviser.
That's the idea behind CollegePoint,an initiative (舉措) to help gifted students go to schools that match their intellectual(智力的) ability. When a high school student takes a standardized test—the PSAT,SAT or ACT—and they score in the 90th percentile, and their families make less than $80,000 a year, they get an email from the program offering them a free adviser. The advisers listen, guide and answer students' questions.
Connor Rechtzigel,an adviser in Minnesota, sees the importance of his role, for research shows that low-income students are far more likely to undermatch because they don't think they have what it takes to get in and because many don't even know what schools are out tjye.aire.He helped high school senior Justice Benjamin, the first in his family to apply to college, think about what his ideal learning experience was. Finally,Justice narrowed in on smaller schools where he could study environmental science and made his final choice:Skidmore College in New York.He felt empowered by the process.
Figuring out how to pay for college is a major part of what CollegePoint advisers do.Nakhle,an adviser in North Carolina,is working with Hensley,an Ohio high school senior who can't get extra financial help from her family. They spent a lot of time comparing and analyzing her financial-aid award letters, which made her decision much clearer. Finally, the Ohio State University offered an option where she would pay nothing.Staying in-state wasn't her first choice, but it was the best option for her.
(1)What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.How CollegePoint works.
B.The goal of CollegePoint.
C.Ways to apply for a free adviser.

As the mother of an eleven-year-old girl,I have read several books that tell parents how to bring up a girl to be beautiful, elegant, confident, and rich. However,I have always believed that girls need to be brave above all else, but this is easier said than done.
I still remember I couldn't see the screen directly when my daughter switched to the animal channel, which was broadcasting a show about snakes.I stood as far away from the TV as possible, too scared to open my eyes. However,my little angel was not scared of the snakes. In fact, she watched the show with a keen interest.I was relieved that my daughter didn't get too many genetic phobias(遺傳恐懼癥).Even to this day,she is still obsessed with challenging herself with new things.
This year,I got a chance to study in Singapore for six months. After the novelty of the first few days had gone,I found myself missing my family. With the summer vacation approaching,my husband agreed to make good use of the fact that I was staying in Singapore. He brought our daughter out to visit me and to enjoy the new experience in a new country.
The reunion day finally came.My husband and my daughter arrived in the second week of July.I was so looking forward to seeing them.I had made many preparations for their visit. On the first day,I arranged for us to see Gardens by the Bay.When we walked out of the MRT station,we were amazed by the sight of the Super Trees. When my daughter saw lots of people walking on the Skyway, she couldn't help shouting excitedly that she wanted to have a try.The Skyway is a 22-meter-high suspension bridge from which you can enjoy a birds eye view.Last time I came here with my friends,I firmly rejected their repeated attempts to challenge me to go up there. It was like the day with the snakes all over again. But could I really reject my little angel?
