1.The pen is more powerful than the sword. There have been many writers who use their pens to fight things that were wrong.Mrs Harriet Beecher Stowe was one of them. She was born in the USA in 1811.One of her books not only made her famous but has been described as one that excited the world, and was helpful in causing a civil war and freeing the enslaved race. The civil war was the American Civil War of 1861,in which the Northern States fought the Southern States and finally won. This book that shook the world was called Uncle Tom's Cabin. There was a time when every English-speaking man, woman, and child had read this novel that did so much to stop slavery. Not many people read it today but it is still very interesting. The book has shown us how a warm-hearted writer can arouse people's sympathies. The author herself had neither been to the Southern States nor seen a slave. The Southern Americans were very angry at the book, which they said did not at all represent the true state of affairs, but the Northern Americans were widely excited over it,and were so inspired by it that they were ready to go to war to set the slaves free.

3.My family,my wife,Joan, our two teenagers Hannah and Joseph, and I,live in Atlanta with our two dogs.
Ten years ago,we moved into our dream house,a very big three-story home.It was a beautiful place, but as our children grew up,our sense of togetherness began to disappear slowly. In the big house,we sometimes seemed to be strangers to each other.
One day when Hannah was 14,she became upset about the difference between the world's haves and the have-nots.She expected us to be a family that makes a difference in the world, even if it's small difference.Joan asked her, "What are you willing to sacrifice?Your house?Your room?" Hannah said yes to both. After talking it over as a family,we decided to sell our house and move to one that was half its size and price and donate the difference to those in need.
After a lot of research,we chose the Hunger Project,a US-based organization. It works with villagers in Africa,Asia and South America and helps them fight against poverty. Our money went to pay for building two centers. Each has a meeting place,a bank and a health clinic.Together, the centers would serve more than 20 villages in eastern Ghana. We also travelled to meet the villagers and were blown away by their hard work and warmth.
To be honest,we were a little worried at first.Would we regard the new home as being too small for us?Or would we think we had given up too much? Two years later,I can tell you:It's the best move we have ever made. While we worked together on our family project,we became much closer. As Hannah said the other day, "We learned how to really trust each other."

4.Last Sunday I was thinking about the difference between successful people and those who don't achieve anything significant.I made an interesting discovery. This difference may at first look obvious, but the fact is quite the opposite.(1)
Everyone has a purpose behind their actions.If they don't,they wouldn't take action.(2)
(3)
Different purposes will result in completely different life experiences.People who work to survive are the ones who fear that some unexpected bill will arrive. They go to bed worrying about money and unimportant things. They hate their employment but don't quit because they doubt their own ability to create something greater.I know this kind of feeling because I was like that once. That's a very uncomfortable state to be in because you are constantly worried about insignificant things.(4)
Now there are some people who don't accept the "Life is hard" story and they are fueled by an entirely different purpose.
They work to thrive.(5)
A.So let me ask you a few questions.
B.This state does not allow you to be creative.
C.It lies in what motivates people to take action.
D.Such an attitude invites great opportunities to you.
E.And they don't think about why something cannot be done.
F.And this makes you take even more or better quality action.
G.But successful people have a completely different purpose behind their actions.組卷:3引用:1難度:0.5
