1.A new collection of photos brings an unsuccessful Antarctic voyage back to life.
Frank Hurley's pictures would be outstanding-undoubtedly first-rate photo-journalism-if they had been made last week.In fact, they were shot from 1914 through 1916,most of them after a disastrous shipwreck(海灘),by a cameraman who had no reasonable expectation of survival. Many of the images were stored in an ice chest, under freezing water,in the damaged wooden ship.
The ship was the Endurance,a small,tight,Norwegian-built three-master that was intended to take Sir Ernest Shackleton and a small crew of seamen and scientists,27 men in all,to the southernmost shore of Antarctica's Weddell Sea.From that point Shackleton wanted to force a passage by dog sled(雪橇) across the continent. The journey was intended to achieve more than what Captain Robert Falcon Scott had done.Captain Scott had reached the South Pole early in 1912 but had died with his four companions on the march back.
As writer Caroline Alexander makes clear in her forceful and well-researched story The Endurance, adventuring was even then a thoroughly commercial effort.Scott's last journey, completed as he lay in a tent dying of cold and hunger, caught the world's imagination, and a film made in his honor drew crowds.Shackleton,a onetime British merchant-navy officer who had got to within 100 miles of the South Pole in 1908,started a business before his 1914 voyage to make money from movie and still photography.Frank Hurley,a confident and gifted Australian photographer who knew the Antarctic, was hired to make the images, most of which have never before been published.

2.William Butler Yeats,a most famous Irish writer, was born in Dublin on June 13,1865.His childhood lacked the harmony that was typical of a happy family.Later,Yeats shocked his family by saying that he remembered"little of childhood but its pain".In fact,he inherited (繼承) excellent taste in art from his family-both his father and his brother were painters. But he finally settled on literature, particularly drama and poetry.
Yeats had strong faith in the coming of new artistic movements. He set himself the fresh task in founding an Irish national theatre in the late 1890s.His early theatrical experiments, however, were not received favorably at the beginning. He didn't lose heart, and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama.
Compared with his dramatic works,Yeast's poems attract much admiring notice. The subject matter includes love, nature, history, time and aging.Though Yeats generally relied on very traditional forms,he brought modern sensibility to them.As his literary life progressed, his poetry grew finer and richer, which led him to worldwide recognition.
He had not enjoyed a major public lift since winning the Nobel Prize in 1923.Yet,he continued writing almost to the end of his life.Had Yeats stopped writing at age 40,he would probably now be valued as a minor poet, for there is no other example in literary history of a poet who produces his greatest works between the age of 50 and 75.After Yeast's death in 1939,W.H.Auden wrote, among others, the following lines:
Earth,receive an honoured guest:
William Yeats is laid to rest.

3.The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth,is of great importance to African ecosystem(生態(tài)系統(tǒng)).Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater,it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna(稀樹草原)surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat.
It is the elephant's great desire for food that make it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day,it kills small trees and underbushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plan is in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.
Take the rainforests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor.By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.
What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.
(1)What is the passage mainly about?
A.Disappearance of African elephants.
B.The eating habit of African elephants.

B.Worsening the state.
C.Improving the quality.
D.Deciding the conditions.
(3)What do we know about the open spaces in the passage?
A.They are home to many endangered animals.
B.They result from the destruction of rainforests.
C.They provide food mainly for African elephants.
D.They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds.
(4)The passage is developed mainly by
A.showing the effect and then explaining the causes
B.pointing out similarities and differences

4.When you bite into a loaf of bread, you're eating a little slice of history, with roots that stretch back for millennia. But this basic and important food, which has dominated tables for thousands of years,is in a dangerous decline.
According to a study,32 percent of the purchased bread is being dumped in the UK.And in France-a country whose breads are internationally well-known-young people are cating 30 percent less than a decade ago.
Traditionally, bread has been a cornerstone of many cultures around the world.Wherever wheat was grown, bread was sure to follow. Its roles were just as varied as its origins.Bread could be used as an appetizer,a palate(味蕾)cleaner,a post-meal palate cleaner-even as an entire meal itself. As its popularity grew,so too did its symbolic value.Christianity adopted bread as are presentation of Christ during religious ceremonies."Breaking bread"with someone became a common symbol of friendship. The French even used to bring baguettes(法棍面包)home as a symbol of love to the family.
But recently, the world's love with bread came to fade. Some guess that the fast pace of modern life is changing people's eating habits.Others believe it's a reflection of health concerns.Bread is rich in complex carbohydrates(碳水化合物),a fact that could alienate anyone who practices a low-carbon or gluten-free(不含麩質(zhì)物的)lifestyle.
The shift against bread is also associated with its mass production.Extra yeast(酵母)and additives are added to the dough,to extend its shelf life.In the process, bread ends up being blanched(變白)and nutritious stripped.
But dedicated bakers around the world have rushed forward to rescue bread's good reputation. They say no to mass production-in-favor-of-baking-flavorful loaves the old-fashioned way.British baker Mark Newman is a good example. His loaves take up to 18 hours from start to finish."In terms of nutrition and eating satisfaction,a handmade loaf of real bread and mass-produced bread are completely different products."he said.Artisanal bakers hope to build on the popular enthusiasm to grow their industry. With a little luck-and some fresh, whole grains-bread might return to its traditional glory.

A.could be mass produced
B.was not used for religious purposes

Karie double -checked the words on her spelling test.If she got 100 percent today, she'd win her class' First-Quarter Spelling Challenge and a brand new dictionary.Plus,Ms.McCormack had promised to do a handstand (倒立) if anyone got a perfect score.
Three more words to go.Q-u-i-c-k-l-y.H-o-n-e-s-t-y.Wait!She'd spelled honesty, not honestly. She erased the t-y and wrote l-y before handing in her paper.
"I'll correct these while you're at the break," Ms.Smith said.
After the break Karie moved restlessly in her seat, tapping her pencil.
Ms.Smith walked to the front of the room and cleared her throat. Then,as if she were an Olympic gymnast(體操運動員),Ms.Smith threw both her feet into the air,"Congratulations,Karie! You did it!",she announced while upside down. The whole class crupted!Ms.Smith presented Karie with her prize.Kane smiled broadly as she read the note on the dictionary:To Kaire for her perfect performance.
"Everything OK?",Mom asked as Karie burst through the front door after school "Everything's PERFECT!",Karie shouted showing Mom her spelling test and prize.Mom hugged her, "Put the test on the fridge so Dad can see it when he gets home."
"And Casper, too." Karie lifted up her cat. "Can you spell Quickly,Casper? And Honestly, and…"
Karie's stomach tumbled(翻滾) to the floor.Honestly?H-O-N-E-S-L-Y!
"Karie, what's the matter?" asked Mom "I don't feel so good,"Karie said, putting Casper down and squeezing the test paper into her backpack.
"Probably too much excitement." Mom rubbed her back. "How about some tea?"
Karie swallowed "How do you know?A 't' is exactly what I needed."
Karie dragged herself to her bed after some tea.How could she tell the whole class she didn't deserve the prize? That Ms.Smith did the handstand for nothing?
