  • 2.    Dan Dolderman started his talk with a story. His daughter was filling containers with snow. When he asked her what she was going to do with the snow, she said,"I'm putting it in the freezer. This summer I'm going to mail it to the Arctic,so the polar bears don't die."
His daughter's twin brother gave Dolderman another shock when they were watching an IMAX movie about the oceans. As a child fond of all fishy things, the boy listened to warnings about ocean pollution and suddenly said to his father,"Daddy,we have to leave now.We have to go pick up garbage and save the oceans."
Dolderman's older daughter also worries about the future. When she asks,"What can we do?"He does not give the standard advice of reducing, reusing and recycling. He knows how difficult behavior change is.He also knows it could never happen fast enough or widely enough to make a difference. As he says,"Expecting most of us to change our lifestyles is highly unlikely."
He is right.Anyone following climate change and environmental research knows we are not just going toward disaster. We are experiencing it.Extreme weather events, species extinction, disastrous droughts and declining water tables are not from science fiction movies. These are our everyday realities. We do not have another minute to futz around and pretend we have all the time in the world to change this.
Although he does not call his solution storytelling, that is what Dolderman proposes when he tells the audience he and his friends are starting a program he calls the "Unstoppable Snowball",a reference to the snow his daughter was collecting to save the polar bear.Dolderman is doing his part to influence environmental action,as a parent,an educator and a researcjye.air.He is only one man,but he is a man making a difference. He gives me hope.

(1)What can we learn from Paragraph I about Dolderman's daughter?

    A.She liked snow very much.
    B.She was a naughty girl.
    C.She cared for the animals.
D.She would travel to the Arctic.
(2)What probably made Dolderman's son worried?

A.He couldn't watch TV at home.
B.Fish in the sea would die of pollution.
C.Someone warned him to be careful.
D.His twin sister didn't work hard at school.
(3)What does the underlined phrase"futz around"in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Change.
    B.Save.
    C.Enjoy.
    D.Waste.
(4)Why does the author feel hopeful?

    A.Dolderman's children are very clever.
B.People have realized the problem of environment.
C.Dolderman helps his daughter to collect more snow.
D.The world environment has been changed quite a lot.

  • 3.A new report connects eating eggs to an increased risk of heart disease. The results follow several earlier studies that found eating eggs was generally healthy. The study collects data from six other earlier studies. It shows a 6 percent increased risk of heart disease when the number of eggs a person ate each day increased by half an egg.
Norrina Allen,an associate professor at Northwestern University said that,in the United States, eggs are generally one of the top sources of cholesterol(膽固醇)in a person's daily food.People with higher levels of cholesterol in their food are at increased risk of the development of heart disease later in life. However,Allen added that she would not say that eggs are completely unhealthy. "I'm not saying that people should take them completely out of their food," she said. "I'm just suggesting that people eat them in a proper amount."
Some experts believe the new study does not prove that eggs are causing heart disease. "Cholesterol's role in the development of heart disease has been discussed for more than 30 years," said Bruemmer,an associate professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. "This study does have clear shortcomings, including self-reporting at a single time point," he added.
Bruemmer said,"Eggs in moderation(適度)are probably acceptable from a nutritional standpoint." "Moderation," he added, "is less than one egg a day, including eggs in foods such as bread."
Holly Andersen,a doctor at the NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, agrees that the study has "real shortcomings".One problem Andersen has with the study is that a lot of the egg-eating people in the study also appeared to be eating much meat and processed meat. "If you're taking a lot of processed meat,it doesn't matter how many eggs you're eating," Andersen said.
Also,Andersen said,"The study can only show there is a relation between eggs eating and heart disease. But it cannot prove eggs are the cause of the disease. It may just be that people eating a lot of eggs are also taking a lot of bacon."

(1)What does Norrina Allen agree with?

    A.Eggs are completely unhealthy.
    B.Eggs contain the most cholesterol.
C.Eggs should be eaten in a right amount.
D.Eggs have no connection with heart disease.
(2)What is Bruemmer's attitude towards the study?

    A.Interested.
    B.Doubtful.
    C.Concerned.
    D.Hopeful.
(3)What can we learn from Holly Andersen's words?

A.Eggs and meat cannot be eaten together.
B.Processed meat may cause heart disease.
    C.Processed meat should be avoided.
D.The study is supported by evidence.
(4)What's the best title of the text?

    A.Do eggs cause heart disease?
B.Are eggs the top source of cholesterol?
C.What's the proper amount of eggs eaten?
D.Is the cholesterol to blame for heart disease?

  • 4.Bumblebees(大黃蜂)aren't simply dancing around our gardens. Now,a new study suggests that bumblebees force plants to flower by making small bites in their leaves.
Consuelo De Moraes,a scientist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, noticed bumblebees making tiny bites in the leaves of their greenhouse plants. The insects didn't seem to be carrying off the bits of leaves to their nests or eating them.
Supposing the bees were causing the plants to flower,Consuelo De Moraes and his team set up a series of experiments. They placed flowerless tomato plants and two kinds of worker bees in cages. The bees fed with enough pollen(花粉)seldom damaged the plants, while the ones without having pollen for three days busily did so.Scientists then removed the plants after the bees made five to ten holes in their leaves. The small holes caused the tomato plants to flower a month sooner than usual.
"In a sense, the bees are signaling,'Hey,we need food. Please speed up your flowering, and we'll pollinate(授粉)you.'" said Lars Chittka,a behavioral scientist at Queen Mary University of London.
To make sure that their discoveries didn't result from the man-made conditions in the lab,the scientists placed bumblebees and a variety of flowerless plant species on their Zurich rooftop in late March 2018.The bees were free to fly as far as they could.Yet they set to work damaging the leaves on all the non-flowering plants nearest to their nests. The bees lost interest in this activity toward the end of April as more flowers came out, according to the study.
The research is of great value, for it can increase the human food supply. However, some questions remain to be answered, like "Why do the bites cause the plants to flower?"and "Does flowering early lead to higher fitness for the plants?"

(1)Why did the bumblebees bite the leaves?

A.Because they wanted to eat the leaves.
B.Because they were to get pollen to eat.
C.Because they were exercising to be stronger.
D.Because they would carry the leaves to the nests.
(2)What does the underlined "this activity" in Paragraph 5 refer to?

    A.Dancing on the leaves.
B.Flying as far as they could.
C.Making small holes in the leaves.
D.Damaging the flowers near their nests.
(3)What's the possible benefit of the research?

    A.Humans may produce more food.
B.Bumblebees can have more to eat.
C.Some plants can have more flowers.
D.Some plants will gain higher fitness.
(4)What's the main idea of the passage?

A.Bumblebees speed up plants flowering by biting leaves.
B.Human food supply will largely depend on bumblebees.
C.Bumblebees like to damage the plants nearest their nests.
D.Rooftop plants flower more than the ones in greenhouses.

第二節(jié)讀后續(xù)寫

  • 23.    It wasn't fair.
Amy always studied hard,so there was nothing unusual about her receiving top marks at
the end of the year. But Farhan was often playing with the village boys when he should have
been studying. To help motivate him this year, their father had promised to buy him a bicycle if
    his grades improved.
Amy was sure that even this generous offer wouldn't change her brother's habits. But when
Farhan started staying home and studying, everyone was surprised.
At the end of the school year,Amy received top marks as she always did. And,as usual, her
parents gave her 100 rupees(盧比) as a reward.
For the first time,F(xiàn)arhan got top marks too.True to his word, their father came home with a
bicycle. It was well used, and much of the paint had been chipped(脫落) off.But to Farhan,it
was the most beautiful bicycle in their country.Farhan's friends cheered when they saw jye.ai.It was
understood that something as precious as a bicycle would be shared with everyone.
       Well,almost everyone.
After a few days of watching Farhan and the village boys learning to ride,Amy and her
friends grew bitter. They spent afternoons on the hill just north of the village, sitting in the shade
of a mango tree and watching the lazy stream flow at the foot of the hill. They could hear the
boys cheering and laughing on the other side of the hill.
"Why doesn't he let us ride,Amy?"asked Fatima.Amy shrugged(聳肩),trying to act as if
    she didn't care.
"He and the other boys just want the bicycle all for themselves!"replied Shehnaz.Sarah
shook her head."But Amy is his sister! He should share with her."An older sister commanded
    respect.
As they talked, the boys' screams grew closer.Amy looked up and saw her brother on his
bicycle at the top of the hill."Look!I can do it!"Farhan yelled at the top of his lungs. He had
finally gotten the hang of it.The boys cheered as he began to speed up.
