  • 2.Luciano Baietti,a retired school headmaster from Italy, holds the Guinness record for the most university degrees. The 70-year-old currently has 15 bachelors or masters degrees from various universities across Italy, and is getting ready to get his 16th.
Getting more than one college degree is not exactly unheard of,but 15 is apparently quite impressive, since it's only been done by one man.Although he spends his days working around his house and garden, like most people of his age;at night,Baretti turns into a student again.Every morning,at 3 a.m.,when most of the world is sleeping,he wakes up and studies by the light of his desk lamp.He claims studying helps keep his mind active and that every degree he has obtained has helped broaden his knowledge of the world around him.
"Thanks to books,I feel free. After all,the words share the same root," he says, referring to the Italian words libro (book) and libero (free). He claims to have been inspired by the 19th century French essayist Louis-Francois Berlin, whose portrait(肖像) is also on display in his study, alongside his many framed university degrees, and whom he describes as "a man of culture and knowledge".
Baietti first made it into the Guinness Book of Records in 2002,after his eighth degree. Then he spent the next 15 years adding seven more bachelors and masters degrees to his collection.
"Each time I set myself a new challenge to see how far my body and my brain can go." At 70-years-old,Baietti thinks he has enough energy for at least one more degree, this time in food science.
Probably the most important thing about Baietti's achievement is that he managed to get most of his university degrees while working as headmaster of a secondary school, and volunteering with Italy's Red Cross. The secret was always getting up at 3 in the morning to make sure that his thirst (渴求) for knowledge didn't affect his professional activity and his family life.He spent 3 hours studying every day,and that was apparently all he needed to pass his exams and write his thesis.

(1)Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.Louis - Francois Berlin is on good terms with Baietti.
B.Baietti is the first Italian to break a Guinness record twice.
C.Nobody but Baietti has ever got more than one college degree.
D.Challenging himself opens up a broader world to Baietti.
(2)Baietti can be best described as

    A.honest and considerate
    B.optimistic and generous
    C.determined and hardworking
    D.reliable and imaginative
(3)The key to Baietti's success is

    A.the support from his family
    B.his eagerness for fame
    C.his nonstop daily learning
    D.his unusual brain and energy
(4)What lesson can we learn from the story of Baietti?

    A.Well begun is half done.
    B.Never too late to learn.
    C.Take things as they come.
D.Strike the iron while it is hot.

  • 3.We are lucky to live in a world that is full of incredible technology. Our living rooms are packed with computers,LCD TVs,video game systems, and Blue-ray players that help us enjoy the latest entertainment.Although these items bring us joy and convenience, they also create a lot of junk. Each device needs its own plug and adaptor to keep its batteries recharged, and over time these wires get tangled (纏繞在一起的).Thankfully, something has come along to help rid our homes of this mess while still supplying these devices with the power they need. It's called wireless charging and this trend is just starting.
Wireless charging has a lot of potential for smartphones and other electronic devices.Electronic devices can absorb the electricity once they're placed on a special charging mat. There are several advantages that wireless charging offers over traditional methods. For starters, cords (電線) have a tendency to wear out with use.Wireless charging users never have to worry about buying replacement cords.Wireless charging is also far more convenient for medical implants,as patients won't need to recharge their devices through the skin using cords. In turn, this cuts down on the risks of infection.Wireless charging can also bring safety benefits,as wired charging devices that come in contact with water can increase the chances of getting an electric shock.Wireless charging gets rid of that danger completely.
Still, there are a few drawbacks to wireless charging. The first is speed. It takes a bit longer to charge devices wirelessly than it does if the device is plugged in.The process also requires more heat,so devices tend to get a bit hotter, which could create other safety issues. Also, since devices must be left on a special pad while charging,it is harder to operate them while they are powering up.This limitation may be gotten rid of in the future,as researchers are developing transmitters (發(fā)射器) that can charge several different devices in a room without the need to connect to a charging pad.Although wireless-charging technology may be far from perfect,it seems like a step in the right direction as we move towards a less-tangled future.

C.It makes maintenance of their devices much easier.
D.It's being used as a replacement for many pills.
(3)Which of the following is a disadvantage of wireless charging?

  • 4.In our life, there are two different types of dreamers,一low-recall dreamers and high-recall dreamers.According to researchers at the Lyon Nero-science Research Center in France,high-recall dreamers reported they remembered their dreams almost every day while low-recall dreamers said they only remembered their dreams once or twice a month, reported Live Science.
Perrine Ruby,a lead scientist at the research center in Lyon, studied 41 people (21 high-recall dreamers and 20 low-recall dreamers) and recorded their brain activity. She found that a part of the brain called the temporo-parietal junction(顳頂葉交界處)was more active in high-recall dreamers. This was true both when they were sleeping and awake. This area of the brain is responsible for collecting and processing information from the outside world. This means that high-recall dreamers are more sensitive to what is happening around them. For example, when they are awake, they respond more strongly to hearing their own names. When they are sleeping, they tend to be woken up more easily by sounds and movements.
By closely studying people's brain activity,Ruby found that high-recall dreamers have twice as much "wakefulness time" during sleep as low-recall dreamers do.And it is during these short periods of wakefulness that the brain memorizes dreams.
This is not hard to understand.Just try to think of your own sleeping experience. If you are restless during the night, you are more likely to remember your dreams, but if you sleep well and soundly, you tend to remember very little in the morning. This is because "you never get a chance to remember",Robert Stickgold,a Harvard Medical School researcher, told The Washington Post.
As another research project at the University of Turku in Finland showed, dream content can also affect our memory.Negative dreams are easier to recall than ordinary dreams.Nightmares are often recalled because they are emotionally negative, and such dreams cause fear.

(1)What can we know about high-recall dreamers according to the article?

A.They have very little brain activity when they sleep.
B.They can remember their dreams clearly.
C.They don't know how to describe their dreams.
    D.They can't remember their dreams.
(2)Which is true about low-recall dreamers compared to high-recall dreamers?

    A.They have higher quality sleep.
    B.They have more sleepless nights
C.They are more easily woken at night.
D.They respond faster when hearing their names.
(3)What is the main purpose of the second to last paragraph?

    A.To explain Ruby's findings.
B.To attract readers, interest in future studies.
C.To show the advantages of being a low-recall dreamer.
D.To suggest what to do to become a low-recall dreamer.
(4)What did the research project in Finland find?

A.Ordinary dreams can help our brain rest.
B.Dreams are often affected by our emotions.
C.Nightmares often happen when we don't sleep well.
D.Negative dreams are more likely to be recalled.

  • 5.A recent survey in the United States showed that the average family spent more money on its pets than on its children.Although rather shocking,it should not surprise anyone who has seen the doggy parlors(客廳)where loved pets rest. Are Americans unique m treating their little friends in this way?(1)

        (2)
They certainly cost much.Last year the British public spent two hundred million pounds on pet food alone,to say nothing of veterinary(獸醫(yī)的) bills or animal furniture. It is difficult not to feel angry about this when considering what the same amount could do for victims of starvation and poverty.
There are a variety of reasons why I find pets-raising alarming. They cause physical problems.
An example of this is New York where they have great difficulty getting rid of the mess that dogs leave on the streets.(3)
But in a number of large cities It is a major problem.
Another problem is the carelessness of pet owners. Most little children want a dog or a cat and they continually push their parents until they get one.But the parents don't realize how much time and money must be spent on the little friend after it's brought home. Then they abandon it.(4)
You must have read of children being hurt by pets on the street.
Lastly,1 would suggest something should be done about it.In my view,it's time we stopped being sentimental(傷感的)about pets.(5)
This will lead us to discovering cures for serious human diseases.

    A.Many people find this funny.
B.There's no definite answer to that question.
C.I can see no reason why we should get upset when animals are cut up for medical experiments.
D.Pet foods often contain more vitamins than human food.
E.As a result.they are allowed to run free.
F.This can be seen when we look at pet foods.
G.No.the English too,pay more attention to their pets.
