  • 2.The waste management park at Water Beach in Cambridgeshire handles 400,000 tons of recycling every year, and is the biggest centre of its kind in the East of England.
Fran Hawes is standing on the edge of a mountain of dry recycling. She says, "Some think it's a discouraging thing, but for me personally,it is a huge responsibility." Fran, who started to do the job at the age of 26,takes her job very seriously. "I am that annoying person at a party who will get everyone's recycling and make sure everything goes in the right bin," she admits. "That's my job. That's my mission. That's what I need to do.It allows me to find my leadership style."
Bin loader Richard Hughes and his colleagues clock on (打卡上班) at the waste service garage in Peterborough at 6:30 and are out emptying bins within half an hour.Richard works four 12-hour days and admits the pay and the condition are not great - but there are three days off which he can spare to his partner and children. His colleague Crystal Teal has been working as a bin loader for two and a half months. "I didn't feel my last job gave me self-worth and general happiness,so I decided to change and do something completely different," she says. "I decided to be a binman. It doesn't bother me that men are mainly doing it," Crystal adds. "It can be smelly some days, but go home and have a shower, you'll be all right."
Their biggest problem? When householders put the wrong material - like rotting food and nappies - in the recycling bins. "It makes me feel angry that they are just putting it out there. We're doing our job to serve them.We are providing service to take their rubbish away and they can't do their part to put the right things in," said Richard. "Any problem has a solution - therefore I'm not afraid of a pile of waste," Fran says. "To any normal person, this might be intimidating (嚇人的).It's a challenge. But this will be gone by Monday morning."

  • 3.It might seem that a fish needs a car because fishes actually make pretty good drivers, according to a new experiment.
Researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beer Sheva,Israel taught six goldfish to drive a motorized water tank.Whenever the fish swam near one of the tank's walls, facing outward, the vehicle moved in that direction. That these fish could move on land gave the researchers the conclusion that fishes' understanding of space and direction is not limited to their natural environment.
The goldfish were educated in how to drive during about a dozen 30-minute sessions. The researchers trained each fish to drive from the center of a small room to a pink board on one wall by giving the fish a treat whenever it reached the wall. The fish was equipped with a camera that continually tracked the fish driver's position inside the tank.
In the experiment, during their first sessions, the fish averaged about 2.5 successful trips to the target.During their final sessions, they averaged about 17.5 successful trips. Finally, the animals also took faster, more direct routes to their goal.
In further experiments, the goldfish were still able to reach the pink board when starting from random (任意的) positions around the room, rather than the center. This finding confirmed that the fish had not merely memorized a set of movements to reach their reward, but were planning routes towards their prize each time. When the researchers tried to hoax the goldfish by placing decoy boards (誘餌板) of different colors on the other walls or moving the pink board to the other side of the room, the fish were not fooled, and navigated (導航) to the pink board.
Behavioral neuroscientist Kelly Lambert is "not completely surprised" by the driving abilities of the fish.In her own research at the University of Richmond in Virginia,Lambert has taught rats to drive toy cars. "But teaching goldfish to navigate such alien land takes animal driving experiments to the next level," Lambert says. "I love the fish-out-of-water idea."

(1)What did the researchers conclude from the study?

A.Fish have the natural ability to drive.
B.Fish have a sense of direction on land.
C.Fish can remember a set of movements.
D.Fish can live in unfamiliar environments.
(2)How did the researchers train the fish to drive?

A.By creating a large and wide space.
B.By trying to give detailed instructions.
C.By making use of the fish's sensitivity to colour.
D.By offering rewards for the fish's successful trips.
(3)What do the figures in Paragraph 4 show?

    A.Fish prefer direct routes.
    B.Fish have a good memory.
C.Fish adapt to a slower speed.
    D.Fish have greater driving ability.
(4)What does the underlined word "hoax" in the last but one paragraph probably mean?

    A.Decorate.
    B.Amuse.
    C.Trick.
    D.Handle.

  • 4.Have you ever been seized with a kind of warm and unclear feeling when you start an old-fashioned game?Or maybe when you think back to celebrating the holidays as a kid, something magical just seems to be missing now. That's nostalgia.
In the early 20th century, nostalgia was considered a mental condition similar to depression.Anyone separated from their native place for a long time was easy to suffer nostalgia. But over the next few decades, the meaning of nostalgia has expanded from indicating homesickness to a general longing for the past. And rather than an awful disease,it turns out to be seen as a bittersweet experience.
From several former studies, researchers of the University of Southampton supposed nostalgia might protect people from being in bad mood, even when they think about upsetting thing-like death. To test it out, they conducted an experiment, where 75 people wrote about their own deaths, and then did a word completion task,in which they were asked to complete different words based on a six-letter word starting with C-O-F-F.The people who thought about dying but didn't get nostalgic answered with many death-related words, such as "coffin",while the nostalgic people gave more answers unrelated to death like "coffee",almost as if they had never thought about death in the first place.
The researchers think that could mean nostalgia, despite being a complex emotional state that can include feelings of loss and sadness, doesn't generally put people in a negative mood.Instead,by allowing individuals to remember personally meaningful and rewarding experiences, nostalgia can boost psychological well-being.These studies are pretty limited, though, and there's still a lot we don't know about nostalgia.
Still, these studies support that nostalgia has a purpose:If people are feeling down,it might cheer them up.But there are also some less helpful side effects. For example, advertisers have discovered how powerful nostalgia is as a marketing technique, for nostalgia in ads can make people part with cash more easily. So,it is not all sugar cookies.

(1)What is Paragraph 2 intended to explain?

A.The depression caused by long term nostalgia.
B.The mental conditions of people away from home.
C.The understandings of nostalgia in different periods.
D.The relationship between homesickness and nostalgia.
(2)How did the researchers prove the result of the former studies?

    A.By performing a test.
    B.By introducing a concept.
    C.By doing an investigation.
    D.By conducting an interview.
(3)What can we infer about nostalgia from Paragraph 4?

A.It needs to be further studied.
B.It helps to remove bad feelings.
    C.It benefits people's physical health.
D.It makes people feel life is complex.
(4)Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

    A.The Reasons for Feeling Nostalgia
    B.The Commercial Values of Nostalgia
C.Nostalgia:A Method for a Better Mood
    D.Nostalgia:A Bitter and Pleasant Experience

The typical cellphone user touches his or her phone 2,617 times every day. Most people spend 3 hours on their phones each day.The effects of this usage are shocking:reducing the quality of conversations and negatively affecting short-term memory and problem solving. (1)
How can you cut down on your usage of cellphones? The following are some methods suggested by experts.
       *Keep to your schedule.
You could set alarms specifying how often you can check your phone.(2)
When your alarm sounds, read and handle notifications (通知) and then put down the phone. To reduce response anxiety, tell your friends or family that you may not respond to their messages as quickly as you used to.
       *Create no-phone time zones.
During working hours,if you're constantly upset by your phone going off,you won't remain focused on the work. Therefore, you could create a no-phone time zone. (3)
So you can concentrate on the work in front of you.
       *(4)

One idea is to replace some smartphone functions with real objects. For example, purchase a radio alarm clock instead of depending on your phone to wake you up,and start your new year by buying a new notebook,so you can write your appointment and to-do list there instead of in your phone.
*Put a hairband (發(fā)帶) around your phone.
When placed in the middle of the phone, the hairband allows users to answer phone calls easily, but makes other uses of the phone more difficult.Every time you want to use your phone, this brings about a mindfulness exercise and makes you ask yourself what your intention is.If you really want to use the phone, set your intention for why and remove the hairband. (5)
Choose the methods most suitable for your situation and make efforts to avoid too much use of cellphones.

    A.Reduce your reliance.
B.Learn to live a life without phones.
C.People get addicted to smartphones for different reasons.
    D.For example,every half-hour,every 45 minutes or every hour.
E.And the relation between phone addiction and mental illness is alarming.
F.The practice helps avoid mindlessly unlocking your phone every 3 minutes.
G.Shut your phone for at least 2 hours of your day, when you're most productive.
