  • 3.In ancient times people usually wrote from right to left. But now,we write from left to right. Why did this change? This has to do with the writing tools and habits that people had back then.
Before paper was created, people wrote on bamboo pieces. The thin pieces were connected well.People wrote from top to bottom on one piece and then anojye.air.The small pieces were then connected together into one long passage.
After being connected, the bamboo pieces were rolled(卷)up.While opening a roll, people usually held it with their right hand and opened it with their left hand. Therefore,it made more sense to start writing from the right-hand side.
This writing habit also had something to do with social status(社會(huì)地位)in ancient times. The top-right corner stood for nobility(尊貴),while the bottom-left corner stood for humility(卑微).
Near the end of the Qing Dynasty(1644-1911),some people began to spread Western ideas and suggested that Chinese people should follow western writing habit.
In 1917,Oian Xuantong wrote a letter to the New Culture Movement leader Chen Duxiu, suggesting writing Chinese characters from left to right. He said that if we used our right hands to write,it would be easier to begin from the left.It would be more comfortable to read, too. However, this idea wasn't widely accepted.
In the early 1950s,famous overseas Chinese businessman Chen Jiageng and Chinese writer Guo Moruo raised this suggestion again.Gradually, newspapers, magazines and books were printed in the new habit. Then people got used to writing from left to right in rows.

(1)What's the writer's main purpose of writing paragraph(段落)one?

    A.To give examples.
    B.To introduce a topic.
    C.To give advice.
(2)Why do people today write from left to right?

A.Because the writing tools and habits have changed
B.Because there aren't enough bamboos to write.
C.Because Chen Jiageng suggested following the western habit.
(3)What does the underlined expressing "more sense" in the third paragraph mean?

    A.更有感情.
    B.更合理.
    C.更困難.
(4)Which is NOT TRUE according to the passage?

A.It wasn't easy for people to accept to write from left to right at first.
B.People started to write from the top-right corner because it meant nobility.
C.We should often follow western habits because they are widely accepted.
(5)What can be the best title(標(biāo)題)of the passage?

    A.Old habits die hard.
    B.Changing the way we write.
    C.Writing stood for nobility.

第三節(jié)

  • 9.閱讀下面短文,將劃線部分譯成英文或中文。
"Without music life would be a mistake," famous German philosopher(哲學(xué)家)Friendrich Nietzsche said over a century ago. (1)音樂是一種關(guān)于人們感情的重要表達(dá)方式. But in recent years, some US schools have cut music classes to control budgets(預(yù)算).
In fact, this is not just a problem in the US.In other countries, such as China and the US. (2)It's a pity that music classes are not as important as those like science,math and history. That's partly because music is not seen as a very important life skill, and it isn't tested and many students are busy with schoolwork. (3)Parents and students might choose to pay more attention to test subjects.
However, learning music is good in many ways. (4)As you play music,you will try your best to use all different abilities. It is not as simple as it looks, according to Kenneth Guilmartin of Music Together. For example, when playing the piano, people see music notes and decode(解碼)them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make jye.aiunds.So (5)你想知道你是否能同時(shí)把音樂和所有這些事情聯(lián)系起來。 Music has a special connection with science as well. You can see that many scientists are good at playing music:Einstein played the violin, and German physicist Max Planck was talented in playing the piano. It is believed that students should be given chances to enjoy the beauty of music.
