2.Over the past couple of days,on our local Freecycle page there have been a lot of wanted posts, all from the same person, basically asking for everything you'd need to set up a house from scratch.
One of the things they asked for was a queen-sized bed.At that time we just happened to have an extra one,so I messaged them. They immediately came in the afternoon. The people who came, two ladies and a man,are actually friends of another woman named Jenny who owned a young boy. This woman has escaped from a dangerous, violent relationship and these friends of hers are helping her and her son start over again, with everything from furniture to toothbrushes on their list of needs.
While they were here,I also gave them one of our spare bookcases and some coffee cups.I even asked them to keep in touch in case they needed anything else-I have a way of connecting people with things.I offered the woman a cupboard we had as well;her friends just needed to see if there was a place or a need for it in their friend's new home.
I was so excited to meet those loving people, who were obviously willing to help their friend. It was clear how protective they felt of this woman and her boy,how much they love her and wanted her to have a happy and safe life, and to spend even a few minutes with people like that is an experience I'll remember for a long, long time.
A quick thank-you to all who have sent more donations over the last couple of days,as well as lovely messages of thanks and blessings.Sometimes it's hard to keep up with it all,but it's a problem I'm happy to have.

3.The last known eggs of the Great Bustard (鴇) were taken in 1832,and the bird was nearly extinct(絕種的) by the end of the 19th century,a victim of hunters. In 2004,the endangered species was reintroduced to Salisbury Plain, with the aim of setting up a self-sustaining population here.
The Great Bustard Group (GBG),the charity behind the release, was set up in 1997 and it has now been 16 years since the first 10-year trial began.Long-term volunteers Fred and Rona Andrews have been involved from the start and, working as part of a team, have helped raise over 200 chicks from eggs sourced abroad.
"For the first week the chick needs to have food placed in its bill(鳥嘴),so we use a feeding puppet to imitate the behavior of the parent," explains Fred. "It is quite hard when the bustards are young because they need feeding every hour and it takes a long time to feed one."
Great Bustards reach maturity at about five years old. "Seeing the first wild bred chick out on Salisbury Plain in 2009,shortly after it hatched, was a proud moment for me," says Rjye.aia.On average,12 chicks are released each year on to Salisbury Plain and in 2018 the survival rate was 100 percent.
"The aim has been to reach a population of 100 birds," says GBG executive officer David Waters. "Now we have that number, and we are hoping the population will continue to grow by natural reproduction."
"Being involved with the world's heaviest bird alive today that can fly has given us both a greater knowledge of birds, conservation and farming," states Rona. "We are contributing to an important conservation project that also benefits other species."
(1)Why did the GBG reintroduce Great Bustards to Salisbury Plain?
A.To test their chance of survival.
B.To help save the endangered species.
C.To increase species diversity there.
D.To help the local bustards raise chicks.
(2)What does Fred say about feeding the young bustards?
A.It is quite difficult.
B.It is very dangerous.
C.It is rather interesting.
D.It is fairly costly.
(3)What does David Water expect of Great Bustards?
A.They will hatch 12 chicks each year.
B.They will reach a population of 100.
C.They will survive on their own.
D.They will live in peace with other species.
(4)What is Rona's attitudes towards the project?
A.Critical.
B.Conservative.

4.While every dog owner knows their dogs can read their moods perfectly, scientists have always been a little doubtful. Now thanks to some researchers at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna,Austria,we finally have some convincing evidence.
For their study, biologist Corsin Müller and his team exposed eleven selected dogs to digital images of women that were either angry or happy.Half the dogs were rewarded for touching the screen when shown a happy face, while the other half got their treat for selecting those that appeared angry.
Interestingly, the dogs were not provided with the entire face. Some dogs were shown only upper halves while the others observed lower halves. That's because the scientists believe humans show their emotions on their entire face.
After some training like how to recognize small differences like the wrinkles between the eyes or the changes in their shape that accompany the happy or angry expressions, the dogs were mostly able to identify the correct expression not only on a familiar face but on a strange face. The researchers concluded the dogs were smart enough to read human emotions.
They also found those being trained to read angry expressions took a longer time to learn. They guess it may be because dogs find angry faces frightening, causing them to back away quickly. However, once the smart dogs realized they were getting rewarded, the trepidation seemed to disappear. In fact, the dogs had such a good time playing the computer "game" that scientists had a hard time keeping them away from the touch screens after the study was completed.
The researchers also noticed only dogs with a male owner had a harder time understanding the expressions correctly.Since the touchscreen models were all females, this confirmed what has been observed in previous dog studies—dogs are more efficient at reading facial expressions of people that are the same gender as their owner.
(1)How did the scientists conduct the experiment?
A.By showing digital pictures of women's happy or angry faces.
B.By mixing the selected dogs together.
C.By rewarding only half of the dogs touching the screen.
D.By leaving dogs to women who are either happy or angry.
(2)Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.The dogs were not all provided with the entire face.
B.According to their size, the dogs were given either upper or lower halves.
C.The dogs couldn't read strangers' facial emotions.
D.The dogs could almost read even small changes that accompany facial expressions after some training.
(3)The underlined word "trepidation" in Paragraph 5 probably means
A.excitement and happiness
B.fear and hesitation
C.curiosity and eagerness
D.doubt and uncertain
(4)How might the results change if the dogs with female owners are shown pictures of male faces?
A.They could only tell emotions on partial faces rather than on entire faces.
B.They found it easy to tell the emotions on the entire face.
C.They found it hard to tell the moods on the faces of a different gender.
D.They would be scared away at the sight of the pictures.組卷:0引用:1難度:0.5
